She was the subject of a lot of media attention when her name was mentioned as a possible candidate to succeed Hope Hicks in the role of communications director. Mercedes Schlapp's position in the role of White House Strategic Communications Advisor is not an easy one. She has to deal with a president that acts as his own director of communications, multiple legal battles that can throw off the strategy of communication for the administration and a number of Cabinet secretaries caught up in their own controversies. Schlapp did not change her goals, and she worked closely to work closely with White House policy and political teams. The main areas of her agenda has focused on issues like security at schools, trade, and opioids. As a director, she has not been in touch with a lot of reporters. The issue came up in March when she received a flurry of media attention when it became it was reported that she would be the next candidate to fill Hope Hicks's position as director of communication. There's been some tense fights. The Schlapp's allies as well as Tony Sayegh began to joust with the media. Schlapp said that when that the Washington Examiner ran a story that contained negative comments about Sayegh, she had a discussion with the latter.
